A time for reflection…..

It’s the 31 December 2012 and I’m taking the time to reflect over the last year.  2012 has been a goodish year, started off with me being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and so a whole re-think of my diet and my life. which means losing weight (again LOL!)

Early on in the year our son’s marriage of 4 years (although 10 years together) hit a rocky patch which resulted in his wife moving out, won’t go into details, but suffice to say I am an extremely proud mum, as my son is the one who looks after their little boy 5 days a week. He’s gone part-time at work to make sure that he can spend quality time with his son and to go to college to learn to be a childcare worker, he also volunteers at his nursery during the week to get experience.

My daughter has also had an eventful year! With her partner, their daughter and his son, they moved from their 1 bedroom rented flat into a 3 bedroom rented house so that the children have rooms of their own. Now they are expecting another baby at the end of June (around the time that William and Kate expect theirs!) so we are now looking forward to our 4th grandchild! We’re going to find out on 18 February whether it’s a boy or a girl. To say we are excited is an understatement.

My sister went to Florida in October so we dog sat for 2 weeks. Sam is a wonderful old dog who was abandoned by his original owners for two weeks when they moved house! He’s now 15 and been with us 8 years and is such a wonderful dog. He’s great with children, and everybody loves him.  Before he came to stay with us he had a series of what I suppose you would call mini strokes which left him “wonky” but he still loved his walks and would run around at quite a speed when we took him to the fields. One night he was in our garden and decided to take a dip in our pond and came running in to the house soaking wet! It was funny, the look on his face, and ours!

Unfortunately things haven’t improved much for poor old Sam and he’s got problems that the vet can’t help with so he’s living on borrowed time but considering in November we thought he wouldn’t last two weeks, he’s still here, albeit still wonky, and although he has days of not eating, he is fighting to stay with us. He will be so missed when he does go, his previous owners were cruel and by abandoning him have missed out on a dog that has given our whole family so much love and made us so happy to have known him.

In June, I spent a brilliant holiday with one of my best friends, Annie, in Tenerife. We had a wonderful week at Golf del Sur and went into Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas almost every day. It was certainly a place that I went to with mixed feelings but came away loving the place and we will go back in 2014 with our other friend Jayne. We had great help with places to see and go from Redqueenmusings, another blogger and we are aiming to meet up with her when we go. Tenerife is so much more than the southern coastal areas; we loved Mount Teide and the forests and felt so sad when there were the forest fires there.

When we are home Annie, Jayne and I meet up every month to craft together (not witchcraft LOL!) but card making etc and have promised ourselves to learn a new craft this year – this month we are trying decopatch! This is just using a pre-modelled shape and sticking lots of colourful paper on to it. I’ll take a photo when we’ve done it! We also have regular get together’s and become ladies who lunch and love to sit in a restaurant or café and just chat about nothing at all and then realise we’ve been there over 2 hours!

John and I went to the Olympic park in September to have a look around with our step-grandson. It was a cold, wet, miserable day but it was so fantastic to share in the atmosphere of the park and we felt so proud to be British and part of the experience.

One of my downsides this year is that despite losing nearly 2 stone between December 2011 and June 2012, my diabetes is well under control but then I lost the plot! I’ve put back on all the weight I lost and even though I know how important it is to keep my blood sugars under control for some reason I’ve was in meltdown! So I’m going take myself in hand and get myself back on track and start to eat properly again and avoid anything sweet (oh sooooo hard!). I don’t drink alcohol very often but I know that I need to focus and get my motivation back.

I also need to start exercising more, walking and swimming are best for me and maybe find a Pilates class. No more shilly-shallying about, got to be more positive. I belong to a weightless site (www.weightlossresources.co.uk) that has helped me before and I’m going to be more proactive on the forums there and log everything I eat and drink and any exercise I do. It works for me, I know it does, I just get lazy sometimes, and I just need to focus!

We are going to Spain again in September and I can’t wait to go back, it feels like my second home and if money were no problem I would definitely have a second home there.

So, although I’m not one for making resolutions as they are so easy to break, I am going to make a few notes of things I am hoping to do this year.

  1. Get my diabetes back under control (done!)
  2. Lose weight (started)
  3. Exercise more (well try to!)
  4. Give my family and friends all the love and attention they deserve (goes without saying really!)
  5. Have a wonderful holiday (can’t wait)
  6. Make time to craft and make my cards and reorganise my craft room (crafting once a month with my friends planned already)
  7. Get cracking with the decorating! (Well, get the plasterer in first)
  8. Tidy up the garden and make sure it stays that way! (small garden but would love someone else to do it)
  9. Try brushing up my Spanish and actually use it when we’re away (Hola!)
  10. Update my blog more regularly! (in progress!)

I’m not saying I will manage all of them but I’m going to try my very best to achieve the majority of them!

I wish everyone out there a very Happy and Healthy New Year! February was to bring life changing events….

  1. What wonderful tales, you should be so proud of yourself not only for your heroics with your neighbour but for sticking to what you know you need to do to get fit and well. I feel honoured to have such a wonderful friend who once committed sees things through. Well done you xxx

  2. Thank you! I rehashed this about 10 times over the last few days LOL! Put stuff in, took stuff out and shook it all about! Got to say that your blog is what has inspired me to do my own and I’m going to make sure that I do it more regularly and include lots of photos too. xxxx

  3. Well done you for making such a good start!! I have enjoyed catching up with your blog – it is lovely to hear from you! I hope that you and your family have a good year and that Sam is doing ok. xxx
